The Coca-Cola Company recently received two special commendations for its contributions to community development in India.
Coca-Cola India (CCI) received a Golden Peacock Global Award for Corporate Social Responsibility for replenishing ground water and setting a target to reach a "net zero" balance with respect to groundwater usage in 2009.
The Company received the India Today Pegasus Corporate Social Responsibility Gold Award 2008, instituted by Readers Digest, for its partnership with India's leading nongovernment organization (NGO), BAIF, in spreading awareness among school students across India, using an innovative specially commissioned animation film, “Our Environment - Let Us Protect It.” The film has been translated to regional languages such as Marathi and Hindi for wide-spread impact and has the potential to reach more than 20,000 schools and millions of students.
The Company's water stewardship strategy focuses on water conservation, access to clean drinking water, and awareness of water conservation and related issues. In partnership with several NGOs, central and state government agencies, schools, colleges and local communities, CCI has installed 400 rainwater harvesting projects across the India, constructed several check dams, and rejuvenated ponds and step wells, known locally as bawaris.
In partnership with Rotary International, CCI launched the "Elixir of Life" project to provide potable water to more than 30,000 underprivileged children in and around Chennai. Additionally, CCI and UN-Habitat have signed an agreement that includes the provision of clean drinking water to 100 schools in West Bengal.
