Coca-Cola has hit the net in the Czech Republic, lifting the
Best Grassroots Event in 2007 trophy for its Coca-Cola School
Cup football tournament. The Company was rewarded for its outstanding
contribution to grassroots sports at an event hosted by the
Czech-Moravian Football Association in association with the
Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
In the Best Grassroots Event category, the judges looked at
football events which urged people to be active in their leisure
time, lead a healthy lifestyle and motivate them to improve
their athletic performances.
The 2007 Coca-Cola Schools Cup, which has been running for
seven years, attracted a massive 1,200 school football teams,
with youngsters aged 13-16. The teams competed in three regional
rounds to become one of the sixteen finalists to play in the
training grounds of AC Sparta Prague, one of the country's leading
clubs.
The winners competed against the champions of the Coca-Cola
School Cup Slovakia, which ran simultaneously, and won a once-in-a-lifetime
trip to the Coca-Cola International Football Camp in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, where they were coached by Carlos Alberto Parreira,
the World Cup-winning coach of the Brazilian national football
team in 1994.
In 2008, the Coca-Cola School Cup will have a UEFA Euro 2008
flavor, in line with the summer championships taking place in
Austria and Switzerland.
