Callao University, Piura University, National University Federico Villarreal and the Major National University of San Marcos recently bestowed the 2009-2010 Environmental Responsibility Award "Ghiis Jáa" to Coca-Cola Perú for its environmental management practices.
The "Ghiis Jáa" Award recognizes Peruvian enterprises that apply successful policies in favor of the environment and fulfill specific eco-friendly indicators, such as environmental certifications, environmental impact studies and monitoring, thereby contributing to the development of Peru. The term "Ghiis Jáa" comes from the Mochica culture's phonetics and means "Earth-Water." The Mochica culture flourished in northern Peru from about 100 A.D. to 800 A.D.
Coca-Cola Perú received the recognition for its implementation of an environmental management program in that reaches all the stages of its production chain. Their efforts have reached several key audiences and stakeholders, while advancing solutions for environmental problems and bringing their own workforce to participate in volunteer actions that address sustainability and specific community needs.
For example as part of the reconstruction efforts after a 2007 earthquake struck the central coast of Peru, a group of employees from Coca-Cola Perú helped set up a Santa Bárbara, CaƱete center in December 2009 for 250 young people with dining facilities and a recreational center. Other initiatives include internal programs aimed at energy and water optimization and community programs developed in partnership with academic institutions and other organizations, such as the Coca-Cola Prize to Eco-Efficiency, the Recycle to Help program, and the Eco-Schools program. |
