Coca-Cola continued to ramp-up its 2008 Beijing Olympics program
by sponsoring the 17th Russian Winter tournament, which kicked
off the world indoor track and field season on Jan. 27 in Moscow.
The Russian Winter tournament is one of the top five events
of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF)
World Indoor Season. Athletes from 20 countries competed in
sprint races, long jump, high jump and the pole vault.
Participants included: Olympic champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy
and world and area champions/record holders Yuliya Fomenko,
Yelena Soboleva, Wilfred Bungei (Kenya), Yuriy Krimarenko (Ukraine),
Yaroslav Rybakov, Vyacheslav Voronin, Andrey Silnov, Tatyana
Kotova, Monique Hennagan (USA), Tianna Madison (USA), Olusoji
Fasuba (Nigeria), Stanislavs Olijars (Latvia), Ecker Danny (Germany),
Jeff Hartwig (USA), Matic Osovnikar (Slovenia), Kabelo Kgosiemang
(Botswana), Jesse Williams (USA), Greg Nickson (USA), Rogerio
Bispo (Brazil) and Sergey Demidyuk (Ukraine).
During the competition's opening ceremony, the crowd cheered
loudly when Valentin Balakhnichev, president of the All-Russian
Athletic Federation and IAAF Council member, and Mikhail Butov,
director of the Russian Winter tournament, presented World and
Olympic Long Jump Champion Tatyana Lebedeva with the Best Russian
Athlete of the Year award for 2007.
