Calories for a Cause Program in the Philippines Wins Awards

March 13, 2007

One of our Company's key active lifestyle programs in the Philippines, Calories for a Cause, was recognized recently with three prestigious awards.

Last September, the first "Calories for a Cause: Burn Calories, Help Charities" event was held in Fort Bonifacio, where hundreds of people gathered to sweat it out for charities such as the Philippine Red Cross, Operation Smile, Give a Life Foundation, the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines, the Department of Health, the Department of Education and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology.

After the organized workout session, we converted the number of calories burned by the participants into pesos and donated the total to the charities.

The success of the first event led to a second charity workout in December entitled "Step Up!" Benefiting charities included the Center for Environmental Awareness and Education, Project Brave Kids and Philippine General Hospital, along with some of the previous beneficiaries.

The Calories for a Cause program received the following honors:

  • Globes Awards: Gold, Best Charity Marketing -- Chicago (U.S.)
Organized by the Marketing Agencies Association (MAA), the Globes Awards recognize the highest standards of excellence in the global marketing communications industry.

  • Promotions Marketing Awards of Asia (PMAA): Gold, Best Charity Marketing; Best in Philippines -- Singapore
The PMAA is the Asian counterpart of the Globes Awards. All Gold winners in PMAA are eligible to enter the Globes.

  • Araw Values Awards: Bronze for Lose/Gain Posters -- Manila
The Araw Values awards panel evaluates programs based on seven cornerstone values: respect for religious beliefs; commitment to truth, honesty and justice; love of country and respect for national customs; concern for and preservation of the environment; emphasis on family unity; respect and care for human life and dignity for all persons; and adherence to authority and self-discipline.

Another major health and wellness initiative in the Philippines recently expanded nationwide. The Kineti-Kids: It's Fun to be Fit! nutrition education and physical activity program for elementary school children promotes three key values -- a balanced diet, regular exercise and proper hydration.

Kineti-Kids launched in September 2004 in four pilot schools in metro Manila. Last summer, after research compiled by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology revealed progress in all four pilot schools, the decision was made to incorporate the program into the Department of Education's curriculum on Physical Education, Health/Science and Social Science in all public elementary schools nationwide.
