Coca-Cola India Celebrates World Environment Day

June 09, 2006 edition

Coca-Cola India (CCI) celebrated World Environment Day on June 5, with the launch of several eco-friendly initiatives.

One initiative included the launch of "Abhiyan the Movement," a film produced by CCI about plastics recycling. The film is scheduled to be shown initially in approximately 1,500 schools in Delhi, and later in schools throughout the country.

Several rainwater harvesting projects and tree planting drives were initiated across India. Work commenced on a rainwater harvesting project in the Chittaranjan Park and Agriculture Research Centre in Kallipur. Rainwater harvesting structures were also inaugurated in various schools in Moula Ali. In cooperation with the Thane Municipal Corporation, CCI launched an ambitious rainwater harvesting project in Maharashtra. The project will recharge 7.5 million liters of water for this community of 5,000 residents.

More than 1,000 Neem and Ashoka trees were planted in Kaladera, in partnership with the local Panchayat. Tree planting drives were also organized in Vijaywada, Moula Ali, Ameenpur & Bidadi. Free vehicle emission tests were conducted in Vijaywada, while recycling bins and tricycles were donated in Ameenpur.

Environment management is practiced by CCI every day, year-round. Through their actions as local citizens, they strive every day to refresh the marketplace, enrich the workplace, preserve the environment and strengthen their communities. Their approach to environment management is guided by a simple principle: to conduct business in ways that protect and preserve the environment. The initiatives launched on World Environment Day reaffirm CCI’s commitment to continuously partner with relevant stakeholders on projects to improve the overall standard of living in local communities.
