Environmental Initiatives Involve Students In China

June 23, 2006 edition

As many as 100,000 students from 1,400 primary schools in Beijing have joined "Save a barrel of water!" -- a community environmental program that encourages children to save fresh water and recycle waste water with their families. The students also will serve as environmental ambassadors in their communities.

The participating students contribute to a newspaper they created entitled "Save water with my family - just DIY!," in which they share creative methods of water conservation.

Organized in partnership with the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) environmental office, the Beijing Environmental Foundation, and the Committee of China Young Pioneers of Beijing, the "Save a Barrel" campaign is an important part of the Coca-Cola system's 2006 Green Olympics campaign. Under the Green Olympics umbrella, Coca-Cola China and partners are also launching an environmental awareness program in 80 universities involving 20,000 student participants.
