More Little Red Schoolhouses For Filipino Children

July 21, 2006 edition

The Coca-Cola Foundation and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) recently handed over two new Little Red Schoolhouses (LRS) to the province of Quezon.

The LRS program brings quality education to underprivileged school children in the provinces of the Philippines. Currently there are 59 little red schoolhouses all over the country.

The province of Quezon was devastated by flash floods in late 2004. To provide relief for the calamity, the Foundation pledged to build an LRS in the area to help the children continue their schooling. The Coca-Cola Golf Classic Tournament in 2005 was held to generate funds for a second LRS in the area.

Besides constructing school buildings and facilities, the LRS program also helps the teachers of the schools by training them to be better in their profession. The Foundation recently held the Coke-Petron-SAS Teacher Training Workshop to educate teachers on new ways to encourage students to read.
