Bringing Water To Malaysian Villages

September 8, 2006 edition

Raleigh International volunteers recently installed two Coca-Cola sponsored gravity water feed systems in the remote villages of Kampung Mohimboyon and Kampung Linapasan, Kundasang, both in the central district of Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia. The project began in July and took 3 weeks to complete.

In Kampung Mohimboyon, more than 100 volunteers installed two 800-gallon (3,637-liter) tanks and two 400-gallon (1,818-liter) tanks to supply water to the entire village year round. The RM13,000 project included construction of a dam and repair of the existing system.

Prior to the project, villagers depended on rainfall or walked 500 meters to the nearest river to collect water every day. Now, every home has a consistent supply of fresh water, thanks to the new taps and long pipes that dot Kampung Linapasan's main road.

In a pilot project earlier this year, Raleigh International and Coca-Cola brought water to the village of Kampung Paus.

As part of our Company's Global Water Stewardship initiative, we’ve committed an additional RM100,000 to Raleigh International for completion of more water feed projects in 2006 and 2007.
