TOKYO, June 26, 2007 -
The Coca-Cola Educational & Environmental Foundation (representative
founder: Hideaki Nawa; location: Minato-ku, Tokyo) was inaugurated
on June 25, the day marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Coca-Cola
(Japan) Co., Ltd. (Representative Director & President: Daniel H. Sayre).
This year, the Coca-Cola system in Japan, which consists of Coca-Cola
(Japan) Co., Ltd., and its 12 bottling partners nationwide, as well as other organizations,
marks the 50th anniversary of its start in business in Japan. On this occasion,
the Coca-Cola Educational & Environmental Foundation was established
by consolidation of the Coca-Cola Environment Education Foundation
and the Japan Coca-Cola Bottlers Scholarship Foundation. The new
foundation aims to further expand the social contribution activities of the Coca-Cola
system.
A ceremony was held on June 26 to commemorate establishment of
the new foundation. At the ceremony, E. Neville Isdell, Chairman and CEO of The
Coca-Cola Company (headquarters: Atlanta) announced that the Coca-Cola
Foundation (located in Atlanta) will donate an additional 1 billion Yen (US$8.6
million) as an expression of its strong support for the Coca-Cola
Educational & Environmental Foundation.
With “Healthy Active Life”
as its guiding principle, the Coca-Cola Educational & Environmental
Foundation aims to grow the next generation and prepare them to take active leadership
in their local communities as well as in international relationships.
The foundation’s major activities include the support for education of young
people in the fields of environment, education, and sports, and the support and
recognition of activities for the younger generation in the areas of environmental
conservation and international exchange (see attached reference materials).
The Coca-Cola system in Japan formed the Coca-Cola Environmental
Education Foundation, a voluntary organization, in 1994. In order to provide environmental
education and training for young people, the foundation has since recognized individuals
and organizations engaged in nature preservation activities, supported information
networks, and sponsored forums related to environmental education. The Japan Coca-Cola
Bottlers Scholarship Foundation, meanwhile, introduced a scholarship system in
1970 for nurturing outstanding young persons to enable them to give back to the
development of their communities. Up to now, over 1,500 young students received
this scholarship. By consolidating these two foundations into the Coca-Cola
Educational & Environmental Foundation and having it approved by the Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, it has become the main
body for promoting and sponsoring out various social donation activities in a
consolidated manner, such as providing environmental education, promoting sports,
and providing other educational support.
